John Drennan: Stepford Wives FG swing into 'action'
Despite retreating to a country club for a spot of golf, reality may be dawning on Kenny and Co, says John Drennan
The Irish politician and the golf club appear to have the same relationship as the footballer and the lap-dancer. But, while all our politicians glow in the presence of their Pringle jumpers and smart beige slacks, few love golfing with the intensity of the dilettante queens of Fine Gael.
The golf might get them into trouble sometimes. But whether it is Nama developers at the K Club, Sean Barrett skipping Foreign Affairs questions on his first day back as a frontbencher in a decade to attend the JP McManus golf classic, or Enda getting caught in the bunker in the K Club when he should have been in the Dail, nothing can detract from the lure of the bag of clubs.
Mind you, it did make for an odd juxtaposition last Wednesday. Ireland might have been experiencing our equivalent of Sturm und Drang, as the final violent twilight of Ireland's banking gods threatened to bring the roof of the Republic down around our heads.
