Senator David Norris and 'Dragon' Sean Gallagher are battling for support to get a nomination to contest the presidency.
Mr Norris, the Trinity Senator who was first to declare, will now need to secure the support of Sinn Fein if he is to get a nomination to contest the presidency.
The colourful Joycean scholar and Ireland's first openly gay politician had hoped that the combination of nineteen Dail independents and a further five independent Senators would provide him with the 20 Oireachtas votes needed to run for the Park.
