John Drennan: Ninety years later and it's ECB that is running us
A failed political entity run by unwanted political nonentities. Welcome to democracy Irish-style, writes John Drennan
If you ever wondered what politics in Vichy France was like, the eerie, defeated mood in last week's Dail provided us with a pretty good template.
It might not yet be time to take the tricolour down from the roof of Leinster House to replace it with the coat of arms of the IMF or Monsieur Trichet's Central Bank. However, we are only one bad run in the bond markets away from such an ignoble fate.
As we looked at a government which has surrendered to the banks and enslaved it's people to save its friends in the banks, you would almost be nostalgic for those times when Charles Haughey regularly claimed Northern Ireland was a "failed political entity".
