John Drennan: Invisible Cowen lacks bottle for battle
Martin Cullen's Dail exit is just one of many headaches for the Taoiseach, writes John Drennan
THE new year may be less than three months old, but already our feverish TDs are in countdown to election 2010 mode.
Opposition deputies may always err on the pessimistic side when diagnosing the Government's health, but it was hard to argue with last week's comment by one veteran TD that "they look like a fellow on his death bed that's only fit to wait to be laid out".
Normally a government might celebrate, or at least mark its thousandth day in office. But as Mr Cowen passed a milestone that he must sometimes have doubted he would ever see, any joy will have been tempered by the knowledge that the only response of 85 per cent of the country consists of the unspoken hope that he might be going fairly soon.
