John Drennan: Greens insist election will be held before end of January
The Green Party cabinet minister Eamon Ryan has warned Taoiseach Brian Cowen that his semi-detached coalition partner will not accept any slippage in its intention to have an election at the end of January.
And the Communications Minister also strongly defended the Green Party announcement last Monday that it would be pulling out of Government after the Budget and subsequent legislation is passed.
Ironically, the Green Party remains united in its determination to pass the Budget but at the beginning of the week there were strong indications by Fianna Fail TD Noel O'Flynn and from independents such as Jackie Healy-Rae and Michael Lowry that they would not support it. In the wake of fierce local criticism both independents appear to have now done a U-turn.
