The new Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett may be called on to adjudicate on an increasingly bitter spat between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael over office accommodation on the top floor of Leinster House.
Traditionally the 'trophy' fifth floor of the Dail with its panoramic views has belonged to the largest Dail party -- which has traditionally been Fianna Fail.
In its time, the walls with the sepia-toned portraits of Eamon de Valera and cut-outs from the Irish Press celebrating former triumphs such as the 1977 overall majority of Jack Lynch have seen some of the most ferocious political conflicts and vicious infighting between the various Haughey, Reynolds and O'Malley factions.
