Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has warned drivers that the new lower alcohol limits will be brought in this Friday, October 28, to coincide with the October bank holiday weekend.
"This bank holiday weekend is regarded as a pivotal event every year for road safety, given the tragic legacy of collisions in previous years," Mr Varadkar said.
From next weekend, motorists will be subject to a new standard limit of 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. There will also be a 'virtual zero' rate of 20mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood for 'specified' drivers (learner, novice and professional drivers).
