John Drennan: €1.4m tab for sick HSE official
Employee on leave for seven years while another 146 are out for over six months
A TOP executive with the Health Service Executive (HSE) has been on sick leave for the past seven years on a salary of more than €200,000 a year. The single employee has cost the health service an astonishing €1,462,000 so far.
The unnamed executive is just one of 147 HSE staff on sick leave for more than six months at a cost to the State of more than €11m.
"This is just another example of the endemic dysfunctional nature of this organisation," said Fine Gael health spokesman Dr James Reilly yesterday. "The decision to leave someone on that level of pay for so long without resolving their case raises serious questions about what is going on. It requires top level ministerial action at this stage," said Dr Reilly.
