The commissioner is absolutely right - gardaí do have a duty. For that reason, there must be no strike

The gardaí would be wrong to go on strike on Friday.

They have a very good case and they are right to fight it strongly. But depriving the nation of policing for 24 hours in two days' time is a major step in the wrong direction.

The leaders of the rank and file Garda Representative Association (GRA) and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) can pull back from the brink with dignity. They can find other ways of continuing their battle.
