Our drink crisis remedy might be found in the pub
I have been at many political conferences which passed well-meaning propositions on dealing with our national drink problem. The “worthy part” was more usually followed by a drinking session.
Let’s get one thing out of the way before I go any further. I have generally paid more attention to the latter than the former. For a long time I lived by a sort of tacit agreement that it is a politician’s duty to condemn alcohol abuse, on the way to sinking a few pints in good company.
I am not well placed to preach on this of all issues. So, let’s try to deal with life as it is.
