If you are looking for signals that real political change is coming, don't look at the emerging candidate list for the job of Ceann Comhairle.
The first independently elected Dáil chairperson, coming via a first-ever secret ballot, had been billed as a significant reform step. But the quintet set to contest the job tomorrow do not look like people who will strike a tough stance against a minister or Taoiseach, schooled in dodging the issue, and running down the clock with tangential statistics.
We are open to surprises. But we do not find someone listed who has shown evidence of being fearlessly independent and utterly disregarding of status in pursuing the citizens' interests.
