Kenny's game of 'political chicken' could end badly
Enda Kenny is like the boy who stared too long at the communication chord on the train. The longer the boy stared, the greater his urge to pull the chord, and trigger the emergency brakes to stop the train.
Brinkmanship is a dangerous carry-on which regularly ends in tears. All week Leinster House has buzzed with the idea of a General Election in about six weeks' time. And it's all because of ambiguous statements last Monday at the site of the old Asahi plant in Killala and his subsequent failure to clarify things in the ensuing days.
The calling of the election is entirely the Taoiseach's prerogative. Mr Kenny could by law wait until April 8, 2016. But there are many within Fine Gael who believe the election should be called soon after next Tuesday's Budget with polling to take place in late November.
