Here's an easy starter question: Can Fine Gael and Labour jointly pick up 10 points before the election?

The question arises because the last two opinion polls put the combined Fine Gael and Labour tally at 31pc - and they arrive at that total in only slightly different ways. With the right bounce of the PR ball, a durable government can be pulled together at something just over 40pc of the vote.

And the answer to our question - provided economic growth continues and unemployment continues to fall - has to be "Yes".
