John Downing: Ireland pleased a UK deal is done - but the real work must start now

Ireland's main interest in this crucial leaders' summit on Britain and its relations with the EU was the conclusion of a saleable deal.

That much is done in time-honoured Brussels fashion, after 31 hours of consensus by attrition.

The key issues for Ireland and Irish people must wait for another day. There is optimism in both London and Dublin that any questions on Irish immigrants' status that arise can be worked out later.
