John Downing: Exiting the bailout will brighten our day, but tough challenges lie ahead
IT IS truly good news that life in post-bailout Ireland will not begin in darkness. As the ESB unions withdrew their strike threat last night, following a deal over pension funding, many people with school-going children were wondering whether the secondary teachers' union ASTI might follow their example. That seems less likely given its union leaders' recommendation – but we live in hope.
You are already forgiven if you did not realise that the EU side of the November 2010 bailout actually ended yesterday.
However, you will not be able to avoid the buzz at the latter end of this week as Sunday, December 15 – bailout exit day – looms into view.
