The political air is thick with emphatic assertions of "No, Nay, Never" to the prospect of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil combining in some government arrangement.
Yet, Thursday's marathon charade at Leinster House only confirmed what we have known for a fortnight now.
The Dáil numbers on any other line-up just do not add up to give us a stable, functioning government.
