First-up-best-dressed charade moves up gears as rhetoric trumps realism on Dáil return
Well now, here's something absolutely astonishing: Fine Gael think the Fianna Fáil crowd are trying to have it both ways on the Budget.
"They are trying to own and disown the Budget at the same time," one Fine Gael source offered as the 'first-up-best-dressed' tussle continued. It could be a working definition of the odd business of politics. It could be a particularly apposite definition in these extraordinary times, when no government has tried to govern from such a position of weakness in the State's history.
The Fine Gael moan is, in fact, just another way of saying how Fianna Fáil perceives their current oddball political positioning. The posh phrase is that they are in Opposition, underpinning the minority Coalition, under a Confidence and Supply Agreement.
