Banning sport sponsorship won't stop people drinking
SOMETIMES in politics there is a heck of a lot to be said for leaving things alone. The idea of banning sports sponsorship by alcoholic drinks companies is a very good example of the validity of this maxim.
The Government will shortly consider a proposal to totally end drinks companies' sports sponsorship by 2020 with no new deals being set up after 2016.
This proposal is a mistake for several reasons. The most glaring error is failure to realise that sponsorship restrictions have not worked elsewhere.
