Theresa May has at long last unveiled her wishlist for future relations between the UK and EU in a post-Brexit world.

And if her wishes do eventually come true, life on this island need not be vastly different from what it is now. Therein lies the problem as the initial quiet reaction from Brussels yesterday was polite but very sceptical.

"These will be very difficult negotiations with all the other 27 EU member states throwing in their contributions based on their national interests. This was just Mrs May setting out her stall but she is going to have to show considerable flexibility in the coming months," one diplomat close to the process explained.
