Enda Kenny has managed to remain hidden in plain view as controversy surrounding Garda whistleblowers generally, and Sgt Maurice McCabe in particular, has waxed and waned over the past four years.

Now the spotlight is very firmly on the Taoiseach as a series of inept actions, combined with arrogant and incomplete responses over the past six days, have brought things to crisis level. From here, it would not take much to topple the minority Coalition he has led since May 6 last - even though nobody at Leinster House wants a general election right now.

And, as if to crown Mr Kenny's misfortune, the issue of when and how he should exit the Fine Gael leadership has crept on to the agenda.
