To many people living outside the United States, the row over the Confederate flag will surely seem a strange distraction - do people still argue over flags in this day and age?

Here on this island, of course, flags are a recurring bone of contention as both tribes in Northern Ireland take it in turns to accuse the other of deliberately displaying offensive emblems - one man's Tricolour is another man's Red Hand of Ulster, after all.

Of course, when it comes to flags, or any other symbol, offence is in the eye of the beholder.
