So, is Corrie a menace to society?

One of the joys of Coronation Street was that, rather like the Catholic Church, it worked best when it was ignoring the fads and fancies of modernity and was merely a bit of harmless escapism.

That all changed with the appointment of a new producer and the socially crusading zeal of the show now means that it is a rare episode that doesn't end with a helpline offering support for 'anyone who may have been affected by the issues raised by the show'.

Spoiler alert (in case you have had your head in a bucket): as the assisted-suicide storyline involving Hayley finally limps to a welcome, if ridiculously protracted, conclusion it seems that soaps have really reached levels of ridiculous portentousness -- and it's the show's critics who are giving it more value than it deserves.
