Oiks - know your place! The Senator is not amused

One of the great myths of Official Ireland is that David Norris is a great bit of crack, altogether. Look at him putting on his funny voices - which often involve a poor imitation of a working-class accent. Oh, he's such a card, is Nelly Norris.
The thing is - he's not. In fact, Norris can frequently display a rather authoritarian and deeply unpleasant attitude towards the lower orders and his recent comments about unemployed people spending his 'tax dollars' on booze is a case in point.
According to Nelly: "I hear people on the wireless saying, 'Oh, what about the poor people on the social welfare and they'll be deprived of their few drinks'. I don't spend my tax dollars to buy drinks for people on social welfare... I really don't, and I resent that. I think it's ridiculous. I don't think tax is for people to be drinking all the time. I see them all around my area buying slabs of drinks for virtually nothing."
It's none of his bloody business what people spend their social welfare on, of course. But the idea of a man who has been in receipt of a disability payment for 16 years from Trinity College while being a well remunerated member of the Seanad complaining about the peasants using 'his' money for drink is quite marvellous.
Nelly seemed furious when his Presidential campaign went spectacularly tits up and he's been grumpy ever since. This is a man who has taken more money from the State than anyone who is unemployed so, if you have the misfortune to be on the dole this Christmas, crack open a cheap can of lager and raise a toast to Nelly. You know it'll drive him mad.
