No point in whining about it - fake news is here to stay

There's an old adage in journalism that if something seems too good to be true, it's probably fake.

Every journalist goes through this rite of passage at least once or, because I'm a slow learner, several times.

It usually plays out like this - young, enthusiastic reporter gets a dynamite lead, thinks they have an unbeatable exclusive and imagines their name on the front page, the journalistic equivalent of a striker bearing down on an open goal.
