There are times when the only reasonable response to a daft idea is to hold your head in your hands and simply moan at the embarrassment and indignity of it all.

That was certainly most people's initial reaction to The Gathering, 2013's 'shakedown' -- using Gabriel Byrne's words -- of the descendants of Irish emigrés. But for all the grumbling and dark mutterings about the Government's undeniably cynical plan, it seems to have worked.

Despite the fact that all opposition was based on sound logic and common sense, it turns out that the naysayers were ultimately wrong. Because even those who were formerly critical of the idea have now held their hands up and acknowledged that while it may not have been the super soaraway sensational success of the breathlessly triumphant government press releases, it wasn't the unmitigated disaster we all thought it would be.
