Ian O'Doherty: So, what did you do in the war?
Park any Republican feelings you may have and admit one thing -- the simple fact is that before America entered the war, Britain was the only thing standing between Germany and a complete collapse of the Western front.
The price they paid was enormous -- they lost their empire, became embroiled in such a vast debt to America that they only paid that off last year and ultimately ended up in a worse position than the Germany they defeated. And, under any analysis, that simply sucks.
But the one thing that can never be taken away from that generation is pride in their accomplishments and the eternal gratitude of people all across Europe -- particularly in Ireland, where, to our eternal shame, we decided to sit that fight out.
