Ian O'Doherty: Equality in the Dail? We need to get the best candidates for the job first
So, here's the deal -- you know that you're probably not up for the task at hand but you have a good chance of getting the job you want because you have red hair and your name is Barry and it has been decided that gingers called Barry are being discriminated against.
Or perhaps there aren't enough Jews/Muslims/Unitarians/Satanists having their voices heard in our national Parliament and therefore we need to move the goalposts to encourage them further into participatory democracy.
It is, of course, an absurd concept, but that is what we are currently facing with the renewed demands to impose strict regulations when it comes to political parties selecting candidates for nomination.
