Last week, I made mention of the weirdly cyclical nature of life and politics - what goes around comes around. Each ­generation that thinks it's dealing with a new problem is merely grappling with the same issues as the previous generation.

Well, some cycles move quicker than others.

Why it only seems like a year ago since we had the great James McClean poppy scandal, which was itself a repeat of the same furore the previous year. And, if I recall correctly, the year before that.
