Gerard O'Regan: Merkel needs to wise up and join in the spying game
ALL the self-righteous nonsense generated by the bugging of Angela Merkel's mobile phone by the Americans is at times nothing short of hilarious.
Of course, the Americans bugged her phone – and lots more besides. And, of course, the world's superpower is using all the sophisticated gadgetry of the computer age to find out the best-kept secrets of both friend and foe, all over the globe.
That's the kind of thing the American National Security Agency, the CIA, and the FBI do for a living. They all operate on the old maxim that knowledge is power and the more tittle tattle they can gather – by fair means or foul – the more they will impress their political masters who occupy the White House.
