It's a political proposal that's almost Zimbabwean in its daring. If taken up, it would cause an extreme rupture between the government and the people.
Perhaps it's worth it, if it allows our political establishment to work off its frustrations. They've been sulking since they got a bloody nose over the Lisbon referendum.
It wouldn't matter, if this proposal was voiced by a fool or a blowhard. But it has come from Stephen Collins, on an Irish Times platform. And the paper promoted the homemade controversy to first place on its letters page all week.
