Gene Kerrigan: Ours is a land of wasted opportunities
It makes sense that Newsweek likes Brian Cowen -- it's racked up gigantic debts too, writes Gene Kerrigan
As Butch Cassidy said to the Sundance Kid, in the gloriously optimistic last line of the movie -- with the two of them surrounded by half the Bolivian army: "For a moment there, I thought we were in trouble."
And a chap might be forgiven a little pessimism. The emigration trail is crowded, hundreds of thousands are being crushed by unemployment, those with jobs have had their income slashed. Social services that were already threadbare are being degraded. And our Government has been hosting regular money bonfires in the basement of Anglo Irish Bank.
Yes, for a moment there, I thought we were in trouble.
