Gene Kerrigan: His royal slyness Kenny can't be trusted
Eaten bread is soon forgotten as Enda rows back on promise after promise, writes Gene Kerrigan
Does he think we're eejits? Probably he does. Here's Enda Kenny on his triumphant journey to Brussels: "Ireland's economic security has been defended and protected." It seems that our Taoiseach brought "Ireland's case" to the EU leaders' summit and "placed that firmly on the table". And "our European partners" were fierce impressed, so they were.
Does he think we're living in the Fifties, when citizens were dependent on statements from politicians to know what happened at far-off conferences? Last week's events in Brussels were twittered and blogged by very knowledgeable journalists, as events unfolded. Anyone paying attention could follow developments long before the broadcast media caught up. Deeper analysis followed as the summit ended.
We probably knew what was going on before Enda did. And the truth is that "Ireland's case" played no part in events. When the big lads have worked out our role in this latest cunning plan, they'll tell Enda and Eamon to jump -- and Enda and Eamon will respectfully ask, "how high?"
