Carrick-on-Shannon is shook but resilient after the news that 1,000 jobs are under threat at MBNA, writes Jerome Reilly

The year was 2004 and Carrick-on-Shannon had just erected Co Leitrim's first set of traffic lights, creating enough of a sensation to make the pages of the national newspapers.
And in the same year Leitrim's population had just recorded its first rise since famine times.
The days of net emigration in the most sparsely populated county in Ireland was gone. This was proof positive that the astonishing boom in the Irish economy was an unstoppable tide rising all boats.
