The poisonous impression that Fianna Fail is looking after its old business pals will take time to dispel

The State's ethics watchdog wasn't congratulating the political parties last year when it pointed out the amount of donations declared was the lowest since 1997 when the law requiring disclosure began.

The Standards in Public Office Commission was taking a dim view of the low level of fundraising being made public and expressing its frustration at the ineffective law in place.
