Fionnan Sheahan: The Greens sign Cowen's political death warrant

The Green Party was justified in seeking to have an election called in the New Year. Taoiseach Brian Cowen was given the chance to indicate he had some intention to go to the people in the near future, but failed to do so.
The junior coalition partners are not culpable for the causes of the economic meltdown, but the Greens have stayed in power for so long they are being blamed for the malaise facing the country.
Without giving any intelligible reason for pulling the plug, the Greens effectively called a general election in the early part of the New Year.
