BRIAN Lenihan and Olli Rehn can always fall back on their love of local football if they fall out over how Ireland intends to fill in the economic black hole.

The Finance Minister was a self-confessed "soccer fanatic" in his younger days as a fan of Athlone Town and his father was an accomplished footballer.

The European Commissioner played semi-professional football for Mikkelin Palloilijat, the local team in his Finnish home town of Mikkeki, in his late teens until a knee injury ended his career.
