Nothing about Scott Brown, a tall and handsome man in his early 50s, indicates that he has recently rocked US politics to its core. But this 'average guy' image helped propel the Republican to a shock victory in January's by-election to replace the legendary Ted Kennedy as representative for the traditionally Democrat-dominated state of Massachusetts in the Senate.

The Democrats' awful campaign and candidate, Martha Coakley, undoubtedly played a strong part, too, but the implications of the result reverberated right across America.
