DID Cabinet ministers deliberately lie to the public in denying Ireland was heading towards a bailout? Did Cabinet ministers not know what was going on? Which would be worse? Either way, the level of denial doesn't reflect well on the competence or credibility of this Government.
Ministers now face accusations they misled the country. Justice Minister Dermot Ahern's description last Sunday of international media reports of talks being under way as "fiction" stands out.
As does his denial with Transport Minister Noel Dempsey on Monday of pressure being brought to bear on Ireland to accept a bailout to stabilise the euro.
