Fionnan Sheahan: FG voters will put Higgins in ... to keep Gallagher out

Gay Mitchell's excuses for his poor showing in the opinion polls are becoming increasingly inventive. He's moved on from the polls being so far out from the election to matter and back in 1997 the early polls ended up being overtaken by events in the campaign.

Yesterday, he was pointing out that 40pc of people make up their mind in the last week.

Fine Gael's candidate will need all 40pc to swing to him to give him any chance.
