Denis Naughten wasn't expected to be one of the rebels. Neither were Simon Coveney and Leo Varadkar. Their presence among the 'Gang of Nine' destroyed Enda Kenny's claim that a majority of his frontbench was backing his leadership.
Without this block, Kenny would have held the upper hand in the psychological boost of having the frontbench supporting him.
The views of the remainder of the party's frontbench were known to the Kenny camp. Fergus O'Dowd, Brian Hayes, Billy Timmins, Olwyn Enright, Olivia Mitchell and Michael Creed were thought to be wavering.
