Eoghan Harris: Fianna Fail should form a pact with Fine Gael to shoot down SF rocket
Crucial to my Christmas is Cork's Holly Bough, edited by John Dolan and published by the Evening Echo. But its cheer is not confined to Corkonians. Any Irish person -- indeed any foreigner -- will find it a feast of nostalgia, local history and seasonal lore.
I particularly enjoyed an article by Eamon Walsh titled 'I was that soldier'. It's illustrated with a big photo of a group of young men in FCA uniform, including my teenage self, departing on the ferry from Cobh for a fortnight's training on Spike Island in 1959.
Spike Island looked like it sounded. A bare and barren place with a massive brick barracks surrounding an enormous parade ground. Personally, I thought it paradise.
