Eoghan Harris: Democracy needs national, not nationalist, broadcasters

Concubhar O Liathain, who sang in Sean O Riada's Cor Cul Aodha, has never been afraid to abandon a political hymn sheet. As editor of the Irish-language newspaper La Nua, he stood up to Sinn Fein in Belfast.

He showed the same moral courage as a board member of TG4 by protesting about the Rose Dugdale programme. Pity the RTE Authority members don't show the same courage. Because there is a consistent lack of balance in RTE's coverage of stories connected with Sinn Fein.

Let's start with the Hunger Strike. The 1981 State Papers show that Margaret Thatcher was ready to do a deal. Richard O'Rawe, a PRO for the strikers, believes the Provo leadership blocked it. That was also the view of my late friend Fr Denis Faul.
