Eoghan Harris: A time for specifics and honesty in Irish politics
Coming up to the New Year we will get an even greater glut of gassy articles calling for a Renewed Republic and Charismatic Heroes. But this is a recession not a resistance to a ruthless invader. We do not need Great Leaders or airy abstractions: we need honest politicians with specific solutions.
Be specific: this is the sole test of good writing and good politics. Abstractions allow escape and evasion. Any chancer can call for public sector reform. But only a brave politician will call for cuts in ministerial pay and pensions.
