Whenever people gather now to debate the great issues involving Ray D'Arcy, someone always points out that the money being spent by RTE on Ray alone could help to provide some vital piece of equipment for their local hospital - indeed for 10 Ray D'Arcys they could build a whole new wing for Accident and Emergency.

For those of us who are well disposed towards Ray - which is most of us, really - and who have never found him to be anything but decent and generally helpful towards the rest of mankind, it seems wrong to associate him in any way with the shortfall in funding for the provision of vital heathcare services.

Who, indeed, in the industry of human happiness could pass such a test?
