It's funny how sporting reputations are born. A rumour, perhaps, or the way a player carries himself, or something as seemingly peripheral as an accent; all these can contribute to the way we think about a sportsman.

So it was with Waqar, an Pakistani gentleman who agreed to play for our cricket team in a recent match against Mount Juliet in Co Kilkenny.

No one can now remember how we came to believe Waqar was a top-class batsman and bowler. Was it something he said, or something that we wished upon him?
