David Robbins: Teenagers -- one day you'll enjoy hanging out at garden parties
The allotments are in full bloom these days. Just four months ago, when we signed our leases, the place was a wasteland. Now, it's lush, green and bursting with life.
Not all of it good, mind you. Something is eating the beans, and there is talk of the dreaded Japanese knotweed, an apparently indestructible Asian invader.
But the other day, one of those blistering ones this week, the place looked its best. As myself and my wife paused from our toil -- sometimes I think we look like those peasants from Millet's The Angelus -- you could almost hear the plants growing. (Maybe that was just the knotweed.)
