David Robbins: A knack for having all the right ideas at the wrong time
We've all heard of The Idea Whose Time Has Come, a notion so simple, so brilliant, so in tune with its historical and social context that the wonder is that no one thought of it before.
Well, I now realise that I have a gift for such ideas. They come easily to me. I probably toss out several a week. The problem is that, in my case, there is a slight time lag involved.
Usually, I explain them to my wife, finishing with a triumphant flourish: "Really, you'd have to ask yourself why no one has thought of this before!" There is a pause. "That's because they have," she replies.
