Humanity of unborn barely got a look-in during debate over Daly's abortion bill

Changes in many areas of Government policy come about not because of public demand but because of lobbying by interest groups and media pressure around a given issue.

There is almost no real public demand for another referendum on abortion. If you asked your average politician how many members of the public have visited their constituency offices demanding another referendum they would almost certainly tell you, "few or none".

And yet another abortion referendum is now firmly on the political agenda. This is thanks chiefly to left-wing TDs, pro-choice lobby groups, the endless airtime RTE and other media give to the issue, and journalists pressing Enda Kenny and other politicians to give their view on whether and when another referendum will be held.
