Colum Kenny: Security nets a diversion from prison's real issues
It's about time prison drug supplies were tackled, writes Colum Kenny, but is it just the softer political option?
THE CCTV footage is striking. A man climbs up a house beside Mountjoy Prison. Then, standing on its roof, he throws drugs into the prison yard.
But not any more. Prison authorities have now erected a net over the prison yard to stop the drug-throwers from succeeding. It is about time. For, even with that net installed, prison officers last week discovered in Mountjoy a haul of more than 3,000 tablets for heroin users, reportedly "one of the biggest ever drug seizures at the jail".
On one day alone in 2009, according to RTE, no fewer than 75 people were arrested for trying to throw drugs into Mountjoy.
