Colum Kenny: Glass of wine a day -- just one, mind -- keeps the doctor away
US research findings should raise the spirits of moderate women drinkers everywhere, writes Colum Kenny
Middle-AGED women who like to drink a glass of wine each day just got good news. And they have 121,700 American nurses to thank for it. What's more, it seems better to drink moderately each day rather than just on some days.
This may sound like research sponsored by a drinks company. But in fact, Harvard School of Public Health and other reputable bodies are behind it. And what they have found is evidence that drinking up to one glass of wine a day gives most women modestly better odds of successful ageing.
Women who drink a glass a day are less likely to have certain serious illnesses by the age of 70. The illnesses include diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
